Praise your child when he/she has a bowel movement or sit on the toilet at the planned time but do not reward them with foods such as candies and chocolates. You can give them stickers or put stars on their shirts instead. Older children may be awarded points that they can accumulate to receive a pre-planned gift such as a trip to an amusement park or a toy. You can also indulge in their favorite activities to motivate them.
If your baby is already started on solids make sure he is getting plenty of fibrous fruit and vegetables. Prunes, pears, apricots and ripe bananas can be particularly good at relieving constipation.
It is always good to report this immediately to your child's pediatrician immediately to let them know. There are some natural things you can do to help alleviate newborn constipation. If you notice that they are straining, you can pull there knees up to their chest or hold them in an upright position with their knees bent. Breast fed babies typically have less problems with newborn constipation.
Fluid intake - keep your baby hydrated and feed her a glass of water or fruit juice during the morning and afternoon playtime. This is one of the best infant constipation cures.
If you are breastfeeding, try adding more feedings. If you are bottle feeding, trying using a different type of formula and adding a bottle of just plain water once every day. Bathing your child helps them relax, which in turn helps them go to the bathroom, so a luke warm bath is also recommended to help with infant constipation.
While lying on his back, cycle your infant's legs - this should help to loosen the stool.
Iron can cause constipation (that was my sons problem) try a formula with less iron and avoid things like infant rice cereal in which iron is synthetic and not usually absorbed well by infants.
Bicycle Legs: Also helpful for babies who are gassy, bicycle legs are a proven method for relieving constipated children. It is performed by placing the constipated baby on her back and lightly holding her legs in a half-bent position and gently moving the baby’s legs as if she is riding a bicycle.
The easiest thing to check after diagnosing constipation in your infant is the formula you are feeding him. Did you recently switch formulas? If so, switch back (not all milk-based formulas are the same). This is one of the useful infant constipation cures.
Is the formula cow's milk based? That can sometimes cause baby constipation.
Colic has no sure-fire cures. You will hear as many “treatments” or tricks as there are mothers in the world. The tricks I find the most effective include gently massaging the abdomen, using the fingers, moving them in a waving motion from the top right of the abdomen towards the lower right, working up to the upper left and down to the lower left. Continue the massaging action into the extreme lower abdomen towards the waist. (This works great on older kids with tummy-aches.)When you the baby straining, gently place your palm over the abdomen, allowing the baby to push against your hand.
If the child is school-going, let the child know that it is perfectly fine to use the school toilet. Explain to the child what bad can happen if they wait until they get home to use the toilet.
Warm Bath - Some medical professionals suggest giving your constipated baby a warm bath. The thought is that this may help relax baby and "get things moving" again. Give a tummy massage as you are drying baby.
