Symptoms Of Infant Constipation

Constipation refers to infrequent or hard stools, or difficulty passing stools. More specifically, constipation may involve pain during the passage of a bowel movement, the inability to pass a bowel movement after straining or pushing for more than 10 minutes, or no bowel movements after more than 3 days. Constipation is the passage of small amounts of hard, dry bowel movements, usually fewer than three times a week. People who are constipated may find having a bowel movement difficult and painful.

Symptoms of Infant Constipation

When we brought our twins home from the hospital, we felt equipped for anything. One thing we were not prepared for was a problem with newborn constipation. We didn’t know a lot about it and we were under the impression that it wasn’t a “normal” phenomenon since our friends and family members all expressed that they had never had a problem with it in their children.

If any of the following symptoms occur one week after birth, your infant might be suffering from baby constipation,. or have a food allergy or infection from your breast milk:

You see blood in her stool.

She hasn’t pooped during her first week.

Her stools remain black and sticky after the first week.

Just because your baby grunts, strains, and turns red in the face doesn’t mean that she is constipated. When a baby is a newborn, his anus is very tight, although it will loosen over time as it becomes stretched from bowel movements. Until then, it can be easier for an infant to seem constipated because he grunts and gets red-faced before a bowel movement. If your baby appears to be in pain, however, as she attempts to have a bowel movement, or she cries while straining, she may indeed be constipated.

Stress and travel can also contribute to constipation or other changes in bowel habits. Many babies grunt and others turn bright red for a couple of minutes while they pass a stool or pass gas. The first appearance of this behavior may be startling for the parent & your baby is not in distress or is constipated.
